Term Definition

Free citizen, person not employed by the Company who, with the Company's permission, settled on Company territory, usually ex-servants; in the 19th century also: descendants of these free citizens, in particular 'Dutch Burghers'. They sometimes owned their own ships to trade themselves. Also called freemen in plural.


Vrije burger, persoon die niet in dienst is van de Compagnie en die zich met toestemming op het grondgebied van de Compagnie vestigde, meestal ex-bedienden; ook in de negentiende eeuw: afstammelingen van deze vrije burgers, in het bijzonder 'Dutch Burghers'. Ze bezaten soms hun eigen schepen om zelf handel te drijven.
