rose | A flower that is particularly associated with Mary, who is called the "rose without thorns" because she is free from original sin. An early legend mentioned by Saint Ambrose says that the roses were thornless until the Fall. In Christian symbolism, the single rose with its five petals represents the chalice that receives the blood of Christ and his five wounds. The red rose symbolizes the martyr's death (the blood of the martyr), a white rose the purity. In its present sense, the rose refers to love and impermanence. |
rotated square | The square, the quadrilateral and the cube represent the earth and earthly existence. This is in contrast to the triangle, which represents the heavenly. The number four is related to the universe stretching in the four directions of the sky. Four is the number of the created world of the four elements, but also of the four seasons and the four ages of life. In Revelation (21:16) the New Jerusalem measures as long as it is wide as it is high. Some monuments have a cube or square (diamond) turned with the corners pointing up and down. This illustrates earthly existence and the directions of the earth and heaven. |
rotated square | A quadrilateral or a rotated square and is a reference to the earthly, the visible world. In European heraldry we know the use of the 'death shield', a black diamond-shaped or oval panel on which the family crest of the deceased is depicted. We sometimes find such death shields as mourning signs in a church. The diamond can also be found as a symbol on steles and tombstones, especially in the northern provinces of the Netherlands. |
