Celtic cross

The Celtic or Irish Cross is a combination of the Sun-wheel; a cross with four equal arms, and the Wheel of Life. It is also a fusion with the feminine (circle) and the masculine (cross). The symbol is said to have its origin in India, where it symbolizes sexual energy between man and woman.

In the Middle Ages, Christianity integrated many crucifixes into their symbolism, and so did this one. The Celtic Cross is a popular object, both as a piece of jewelry, decoration or as a funerary monument. However, for many it is nothing more than a beautiful symbol of Christianity and sometimes a link to ancient Ireland and Scotland. The true meaning has faded into the background.

A putto (plural: putti or puttos) or amoretto is a plump child figure in sculpture and painting, almost always male and usually naked. If the child has wings, it is also called a cherub. A cherub is often found or depicted on a children's grave, but can also be found on funerary monuments for adults.

The forerunners of the putti were Cupid (otjes) and the erotics from ancient times, love gods that are found, for example, on children's sarcophagi, dancing, fighting, making music or otherwise. It is about naked child figures as companions of the love god Eros. The revival of these figures is attributed to the Florentine Renaissance sculptor Donatello (1386-1466).

Besides a decorative function, putti often also had an allegorical meaning.

Every now and then a column is decorated with various elements such as garlands (garland of flowers, leaves or fruits), a garland or even a snake. A serpent around a column symbolizes the person's strength in wisdom. Sometimes the broken column is also covered with a mourning cloth. This is called 'a veiled column' or 'a veiled lady'.

Literally, a column is the physical carrier of buildings, they symbolize strength or power and durability. Without these necessary support elements, the vault would collapse.
